AVC STEM Club

General Meetings every Friday in Uhazy Hall 201, starting at 2:30pm. Come join us!

The purpose of the AVC STEM Club is to facilitate the interest, education, and networking ability of STEM majors at Antelope Valley College; to increase the social support within and visibility of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; and to advocate for STEM programs at AVC. While we are the STEM Club, students of any major are highly encouraged to join.  Regardless of your major, if you like the STEM Field, we're the club for you!

Since being founded in 2014, we have given life to a community of STEM majors to find others who enjoy the subjects they do. Finding a committee that best fits your interests, the door to endless opportunities opens up! Whether you like computers, robots, science, space, medicine, or helping the community, there is a place for you! Find volunteer opportunities, low-to-no cost field trips, scholarships, internships, and other resources at both the STEM Club meetings and Committee meetings. Here's just some of the things we've done this year so far:

Different Kinds of Meetings

We have a lot of meetings, and each one possess a specific reason for gathering. Below are the different types of meetings and how often they occur:

General STEM Club Meetings

General STEM Club meetings are where all members meet up every Friday in Uhazy Hall 201 at 2:30pm. At these meetings, you can obtain important information about field trips, social events, and guest speakers. While extremely informative, we try our best to keep the meetings fun. At every meeting, there is a raffle held (which can be entered by signing in for attendance) where we give away 3D printed items (courtesy of our Secretary, Kayla). For for Zoom link to our general meetings or would like to add anything to the next meeting's agenda, please email our President, Christine Sipin, at csipin@avc.edu.

Ad-Hoc Committee Meetings

These committees are created upon demand for big events (e.g. the Halloween Carnival Committee) and meetings are scheduled as needed. Members of any committee are encouraged to join the ad-hoc committees, as they're a perfect opportunity to gain those STEM Hours and beef up their resume (what university doesn't like community involvement). Our Vice President, Gustavo Quintero, is the lead of these committees. If you have any questions, please email him at gquintero4@avc.edu.

Committee Meetings

While we all come together for our weekly meetings on Friday, each committee has their own designated meeting times throughout the week (see our monthly calendar for meeting dates, times, and locations). Whether you're interested in science, engineering, medicine, or simply being involved on campus, there's a committee for you! Each committee is led by their own Chair & Co-Chair and guided by a coordinating Advisor. To find your specific committee, click here.

Sub-Committee Meetings

Depending on the committee, some may branch off into sub-committees (e.g. Undergrad. Research's American Coot Study). These sub-committees are specialized to work on individual projects within their committees, and may hold meetings as necessary. Each committee is led by their own Chair & Co-Chair and guided by a coordinating Advisor. To find more information about sub-committees in your specific committee, click here.

 Our Committees

The Pre-Med. Committee is a home for future doctors at AVC. We encourage growth through medical resources, transferring information, and social support through the hardest science classes offered on campus. Come hear from colleagues at all stages in their education on what to expect, and the best studying techniques for each subject. Hear from our guest speakers, such as practicing physicians and medical school ambassadors, who join us virtually to provide insider information on what to expect. Gain the opportunity to record your volunteer and clinical hours, officiated by the Vice President of the STEM Club. get help from our Peer Mentor, Gabriella Espinoza, a Pre-Med Committee Alumni & Senior at CSULB.

We meet every Monday, from 5-6pm via Zoom. Please email Christine Sipin (csipin@avc.edu) or Adriana Pimentel (apimentel2@avc.edu) for the link.

The Undergraduate Research Committee welcomes all science minds! With new projects every semester, we experience the research process firsthand with personal help and mentorship from science professors. This includes brainstorming with peers, collecting data in the field or in a laboratory setting, analyzing data, and presenting findings not only to the STEM Club, but to conferences. This committee offers unique opportunities that not many schools offer! Any STEM student will benefit greatly from the skills and connections that Undergraduate Research offers.

We’d love to have you! We meet every Friday at 1:30pm in UH105 and you can email the Chair (Brooklyn Stone) or Co-Chair (Diana Ferrassoli) any time at bstone10@avc.edu or dferrassoli@avc.edu respectfully.
